Affiance

Gallery Prostor, Split, Croatia

video, drawings, spacial installation

2024.

In 2024, I created an exhibition in collaboration with Jelena Vuković, a poet and artist from Montenegro. Since we both explore feminine archetypes through our work for this exhibition we decided to focus on the archetype of affiance.

Affiance is an archaic English noun meaning “trust, faith, confidence,” and  “marriage contract or promise”.
The Croatian title of the exhibition Vjer•e•nica plays with the words “vjerenica” which means fiancée (a woman engaged to be married) and “vjernica” which means a woman who believes in God.

I made a piece called Affiance in the form of a triptych, consisting of three videos, with a framed drawing of a rose above each screen. The piece is a poetic exploration of the archetype of Mary Magdalene and the different iconography her character has taken on throughout art history, as well as my own interpretation.

Here you can read the full text by curator Jasmina Šarić.
